Every child knows they are important in my class as they decorate their piece of our collage 🧩.

It metches the book Our Class Is a Family, by Shannon Olsen.

Students don’t know the whole picture, just their peace. They color it however they want, and the result is a beautiful 🌈 of color, representing each child’s personality.

Right now, Throat Coat is my drink of choice while #reading in bed.

I often enjoy herbal teas as the weather gets cooler. And I stock up on a few for supplemental medicinal purposes too.

I keep my sweeteners simple: honey or monkfruit.

Looking for a great class read aloud or something to share with your kids?

The Tale of Despereaux was written by Kate DiCamillo in 2003, with the animated adventure film soon following in 2008.

The symbolism of light and dark is so powerful in this story, intended for ages 7-10. Reading it leads to wonderful discussions of right and wrong, hope and despair, optimism and pessimism.

Despereaux, an adorable mouse with oversized ears, has incredible gifts to hear and smell more than the average mouse. Plus, he can READ!

Roscuro, a raspy rat who lives in the dark dungeons of their castle, is drawn to the light upstairs. But tragedy and his fellow rats have taught him to make others’ lives miserable.

Princess Pea is beautiful and full of light. Despereaux loves her and is on a quest to save her.

¡Hola! Where in the world is Spanish the first language?

Today was our first day of school and our first Spanish lesson. We started with the big picture. 🧩

I explained how Spain and Portugal wanted world dominance many years ago. They traveled to the lower Americas and brought their religion, customs, and languages.

We talked about how many of these countries first spoke Native American languages. They learned Spanish (and Portuguese) and kept using it. In fact, it became a common language for those countries to use and connect.

My students are young. Yet they caught a big glimpse of world colonization.

Now, as they go forward this year, they have an understanding that speaking Spanish is a key world language.

They understand WHY we’re learning it.

About a year and a half ago, my son’s school pri

About a year and a half ago, my son’s school principal asked if I would represent their school and serve on the district’s sensitive materials committee.

I figured it would be a challenging experience, but it’s also my passion to help others choose good content to put into their minds.

So I agreed.

At first things went well.

It was a small committee. Maybe eight people. I never met them. I only knew names. We all received instructional materials via email and were loaned copies of books in question.

Our task was to read and understand state law to prevent the distribution of pornography in our schools.

The law was to be our rubric for judging the books. We were to put aside personal agendas and look at the law.

It was pretty straightforward: no titillating, salacious material. No masochism or detailed explanations of intimacy, etc.

I shuddered to think that anything already on school shelves would violate this criteria. Of course not!

I was absolutely wrong. Parents had flagged several books.

Collectively, we reviewed passages. All were voted for removal, but many were by a narrow margin.

In the end, we were asked to read one in its entirety.

So I began. Every page was flooded with f-bombs and other foul language. Yet I continued, because it wasn’t our assignment to vote on a book removal based on those concerns.

Such a riveting story! After 8 hours of listening, I ran into a steamy scene. 😬

Parents of teens, this series should be on your radar. I’m showing you the first book here.

I understand from friends that the other books are increasingly racey.

So form your own judgment on this one. Personally, I would not recommend it for teens. In fact, our state has removed it from school shelves because it violates Utah’s law on pornographic content in our educational system.

🎧I listened to this one recently. Good narration. Starts off slow but picks up. Engaging story about migrant workers.

A little girl is kidnapped. Law enforcement does almost nothing to help find her. She grows up an only child with kind parents, but her mother is overly protective.

Some things just don’t make sense to her. She doesn’t look like her parents. She has darker skin. And she has these dreams … like flashbacks to something.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this one. It does have some strong language and includes some f-bombs, which always makes me cringe.

💜💜💜#haroldandthepurplecrayon is such a great movie! 💜💜💜

It starts off with the beloved book by Crockett Johnson. The characters miss hearing their beloved narrator. All they know is he’s an old man.

Where is he??? They enter the real world to find out.

Zachary Levi is the perfect human version of a grownup Harold. Moose and Porcupine transform into human characters too, though they keep their animal instincts and fun habits.

The characters are clever and so is the script. It was so nice to LOL several times and not see any cringeworthy content.

Rated PG. I predict this will be a hit movie with schools.

Until then, go and see it. I don’t know why our theater was vastly empty.

I think the previews are confusing and a lot of kids don’t know Harold anymore. Perhaps opening the movie during back-to-school season wasn’t the best plan also.

But go and see Harold. And you can even be like my cute neighbor friend in the picture and wear all your purple. 💜💜💜

Teachers, You don’t have to set up the perfect classroom.

Keep it simple.

We don’t even have desks at our private school. Three children per table share simple supplies.

We get items out as we need them and put them away right after. We don’t have the space otherwise.

In doing so, we’re eliminating A LOT of clutter, which is perfect for minimizing sensory overload.

PLEASE RESIST putting a ton of visuals on your walls and on every conceivable space.

It’s overwhelming to many children.

Give yourself and your students the gift of simplicity.

Challenge yourself to put up your classroom in just a couple of hours. Use the rest of your time to prep lesson plans for the school year so you’re ahead of the game.

You’re an especially good teacher if you focus on the basics and resist following stressful classroom decor trends. 🍎

Why in the world is this title so screwy? Why not

Why in the world is this title so screwy? Why not either drop the ly or continue with it?

If it’s a direct quote, it looks like a mistake as cover text. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But there must be a reason because the inside front cover shows 17 writers and authors who collaborated on it.

Even though the title confuses me, I am enjoying the read. From mid to end of July, I often feel a nudge to read about the pioneers. Utah has a lot of celebrations on July 24 and that week to celebrate the pioneers’ arrival in the SLC valley.

So my thoughts are often turned to them in an effort to learn more of their history and better appreciate my beautiful life because of their incredible sacrifices to be here.

Since it’s a pretty thick book, I’m still working my way through it.

If you’re a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or are very familiar with its history, you’ll find the information to be quite interesting and well researched.

The third in a series of four, this volume covers the years 1894-1955. I’m currently reading a lot about the prophet Joseph F. Smith, who was a nephew of Joseph Smith and sixth president of the church.
