Thank you. Two simple words. Yet how often do we say them? Better yet, how often do we write them to someone in a note they can keep. It’s always been important to say thank you. In today’s world it’s even more important and sometimes so rare. Yet we can truly make someone’s day just by thanking them for their kindness in our lives. We can let them know that they “light the world” with their efforts and that they’ve made a difference to us.
Every holiday season I look forward to focusing on Christ and focusing on others. I’ll bet you do too. I especially love to support my church’s yearly effort to Light the World with kindness.
To help all of us focus a little more on giving this Christmas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers a free guided calendar of things we might do to serve daily in December. This year over 774,000 people are participating so far.
One of the easiest and most impactful ways to thank someone is with a note. So I’ve created a really fun card you can use in a variety of ways. Download, print, write a few sentiments, and send.
Or save it to your camera roll and insert into a text or social media message to someone you care about it. It will only take you a few seconds and will let them know that you truly care.

Giving Machines
What are they? Well, they’re vending machines with a twist–and they’re part of the Light the World initiative.I Basically, you can select, swipe, and give. Last year we donated a pair of eye glasses to someone in need. As many of you know, I don’t see well, and I want to help others who also struggle with their sight.
There are so many options to give: animals, clothing, clean water, local resources. If you happen to live near a giving machine, take your family and visit a machine to do some good.
Last year, Giving Machines in 5 locations collected more than $2 million in 38 days. This year there are more machines in more locations. Click here to see where they are.
If you don’t live near a Giving Machine, visit JustServe.org to discover volunteer options near you.
The Christ Child: A Nativity Story
Every Christmas season our family dedicates some time to reading about the Christ Child’s birth or watching a reenactment. I know many of your families do the same. New this year is an 18-minute video depiction that I especially like. Everything is spoken in Aramaic, a common language of Judea at the time. You may access the video link here.
Other Ways to Light the World
Text Prompts. We often have our phones in our hands. So let’s put them to good use this holiday season. One way is to sign up for daily text prompts to help you with your Light the World service. This link will show you how to sign up. It takes just a couple of seconds, and you’re good to go. Beginning December 1, you’ll receive daily prompts.
Daily Ideas. Print the calendar above for daily ideas. Or browse this list that I put together last year. Everything is still very current and would be completely helpful this year as well.
Attend a Christmas worship service. I invite you to attend any service that helps you draw near to Jesus Christ. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You are most welcome to attend a service in a location near you. This link will show you where our meetinghouses are located.
