Thank You and Gracias Cards for Light the World 2019

November 24, 2019 By Kerry Leave a Comment

Thank you. Two simple words. Yet how often do we say them? Better yet, how often do we write them to someone in a note they can keep. It’s always been important to say thank you. In today’s world it’s even more important and sometimes so rare. Yet we can truly make someone’s day just by thanking them for their kindness in our lives. We can let them know that they “light the world” with their efforts and that they’ve made a difference to us.

Every holiday season I look forward to focusing on Christ and focusing on others. I’ll bet you do too. I especially love to support my church’s yearly effort to Light the World with kindness.

To help all of us focus a little more on giving this Christmas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers a free guided calendar of things we might do to serve daily in December. This year over 774,000 people are participating so far.

Light the World 2019

One of the easiest and most impactful ways to thank someone is with a note. So I’ve created a really fun card you can use in a variety of ways. Download, print, write a few sentiments, and send.

Or save it to your camera roll and insert into a text or social media message to someone you care about it. It will only take you a few seconds and will let them know that you truly care.

Giving Machines

What are they? Well, they’re vending machines with a twist–and they’re part of the Light the World initiative.I Basically, you can select, swipe, and give. Last year we donated a pair of eye glasses to someone in need. As many of you know, I don’t see well, and I want to help others who also struggle with their sight.

There are so many options to give: animals, clothing, clean water, local resources. If you happen to live near a giving machine, take your family and visit a machine to do some good.

Last year, Giving Machines in 5 locations collected more than $2 million in 38 days. This year there are more machines in more locations. Click here to see where they are.

Giving Machine, Salt Lake City, Light the World
Giving machines accept your credit-card donations. You choose what to donate.

If you don’t live near a Giving Machine, visit JustServe.org to discover volunteer options near you.

The Christ Child: A Nativity Story

Every Christmas season our family dedicates some time to reading about the Christ Child’s birth or watching a reenactment. I know many of your families do the same. New this year is an 18-minute video depiction that I especially like. Everything is spoken in Aramaic, a common language of Judea at the time. You may access the video link here.

Other Ways to Light the World

Text Prompts. We often have our phones in our hands. So let’s put them to good use this holiday season. One way is to sign up for daily text prompts to help you with your Light the World service. This link will show you how to sign up. It takes just a couple of seconds, and you’re good to go. Beginning December 1, you’ll receive daily prompts.

Daily Ideas. Print the calendar above for daily ideas. Or browse this list that I put together last year. Everything is still very current and would be completely helpful this year as well.

Light the World: 30 Days and 30 Ways

Attend a Christmas worship service. I invite you to attend any service that helps you draw near to Jesus Christ. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You are most welcome to attend a service in a location near you. This link will show you where our meetinghouses are located.

Please help us share the special purpose of Light the World. You can pin this on Pinterest to share with others and keep for future use.

I’m having the hardest time getting through this I’m having the hardest time getting through this one. Anyone else? I’ve absolutely loved Fried Green Tomatoes and Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven and others. But this one is as slow as cold tar for me.

It’s almost like I didn’t miss the characters: Dot Weem , Ruth, Aunt Idgie, Bud.

This novel recaps their lives many years post-Whistle Stop Cafe. I thought I’d enjoy a good book reminisce. But I’m bored.

Have you read this one? I’m on page 77 and it’s been days since I last picked it up. Does it get better? I’m thinking I’ll return it to the library unfinished. But someone clue me in if it gets good.

Tomorrow, March 4, is National Grammar Day. Bet yo Tomorrow, March 4, is National Grammar Day. Bet you didn't know that! I know, there's a national day for everything. But for wordsmiths and grammarians, this is a good one. ⠀
⠀
There’re so many ways to celebrate the day. Try these on for size:⠀
⠀
Read a new blog, book, magazine, or newspaper. You might learn a new turn of phrase or word. ⠀
Learn a new word from another language. Not all languages use the same grammar rules. Some languages even have words that don’t exist in other languages. ⠀
Spend time with someone who speaks your first language as a second language. You might learn something new about syntax, tense, or spelling. ⠀
What might be a grammar error in one language is perfectly fine in another. Do you speak two languages or more? What are the unique differences between grammar rules that you’ve noticed?⠀

The Indigo Girl, by Natasha Boyd, is a fabulous read for February’s Black History Month. Historical fiction. Young Eliza Lucas (1722-1793) is just a teen when her father puts her in charge of the family’s South Carolina plantations as he returns to England in pursuit of a military career.

Learning how much the French pay for indigo dye, she resolves to grow it on their acreage and pay for all their debts, which the father has amassed in his military endeavors.

Eliza has the plan but doesn’t know the complex process for making the dye. But some of the slaves on their plantation do.

Read on as the book explores kindness, cruelty, and all the wrongs of slavery.

I buy these 🌷 tulips in a vase every year. They I buy these 🌷 tulips in a vase every year. They absolutely make me happy every time I look at them. I love watching them grow from the bulb until they produce beautiful blooms. To me, it’s always a personal message that life goes on, that hard times pass, and that there’s something beautiful around every corner.

I’m not just being a Pollyanna when I say these things. I’ve had my share of licks and challenges. Some of them have been frankly awful and seemingly insurmountable at the time.

But over the years, I’ve survived them. And I’ve come through the wear and tear a bit stronger, a bit wiser.

For now, I’m enjoying the sunshine in my life. ☀️ Today I enjoy these 💐 flowers. Today is good.

What helps you to feel happy or content? It’s a little different for each of us.
