Have you noticed the cute Fa La La La Llama Christmas trend? I love it! So clever! And it reminds me of my Latin American adventures years ago and the llama we used to have on our sheep farm. Yes, our family actually owned a llama!
I grew up in southeastern Idaho, and we raised just over 100 head of sheep. The Bear River ran through a portion of our property, and coyotes would cross at night to snack on our critters. So my dad decided he’d had enough one year and bought a llama. At first, I was skeptical. The only thing I could think of was “Llamas spit. Or kick.” But the llama was kind of cute, in a weird way. So I liked him. My dad named him Ralph. That made no sense until he said he couldn’t be yelling “Rafael! Rafael!” all the time if he needed to get the llama’s attention. 🙂

Our llama, Ralph, kind of looked like this guy.
Anyway, Ralph did his job and kept the sheep safe. No more lost little lambs. He stayed with the herd and seemed very content to be with them. I never snuggled up with him, the way I did with some of the sheep, because of the possibility of spit. He never did spit at me or anyone in the family, as far as I know. But I could never get that possibility out of my mind. So Ralph was years ago. So were the sheep. We sold the farm in 1999. I still think about my days on the farm. Some days I miss it. So thanks for letting me indulge in a little nostalgia here.
